Edward D. Wood Jr.

Edward Davis Wood Jr. (October 10, 1924, Poughkeepsie, New York — December 10, 1978, Los Angeles) was an American film director, screenwriter, producer, editor, actor, and writer. He was awarded the title of "worst director of all time", which was given to him by two film critics-Harry and Michael Medved (English). - in his book "The Golden Turkey Awards" in 1980 (that is, two years after Wood's death). In the movies, he is also known as Daniel Davis and Don Miller. Wood's films starred his favorite actor, Bela Lugosi, who was also his friend. He was married twice, and has a child with his first wife, Norma McCarthy. Ed Wood often shot 20-30 scenes a day, most of them from the first take.

Edward Davis Wood, Jr. was born on October 10, 1924, in Poughkeepsie, New York. His mother always wanted a girl, and his father, who served as a postman, was indifferent to the sex of the unborn child. As a result, Ed was dressed in women's clothing, and later this became his addiction. In this sense, it is indicative of the case when on Halloween he won the 1st prize, wearing a woman's dress. In the 1940s, at the age of 17, Wood goes to fight in World War II, where he participates in the Battle of Guadalcanal. Having a passion for dressing up, he wore women's underwear under his uniform. But because Wood was hiding his transvestism, he was afraid that he would be hurt, and that his secret would be revealed. After the war, he went to Los Angeles to make films. Initially, Wood ran small errands in Hollywood.

Ed Wood has promoted his many projects in both theater and literature, as well as in film. Wood offered publishers criminal literature, which often featured transvestites and his favorite sweaters. Wood's acting and directing debut was the film "Glen or Glenda", in which he played the main role. This is the only film by Wood that had a professional producer-George Weiss, the owner of the Screen Classics studio. The picture failed. A small role in the film was played by Ed's favorite actor, Bela Lugosi, who suffered from drug addiction. Initially, the film had the working title "I changed my gender"and in the working version told the story of a transsexual Kristin Jorgensen. Wood wrote a new, now autobiographical, screenplay, calling the film "Glen or Glenda".

All the other films were produced and financed by people who had nothing to do with cinema. For example, the shooting of the movie "Bride of the Monster" was allocated money by the owner of a slaughterhouse from Texas, Donald McCoy, in the same film his son Tony McCoy starred. No less comical were the filming process and its preparation. So, for one of the episodes of the movie "Bride of the Monster", Wood needed an octopus, but due to lack of money, Wood stole a rubber octopus from the warehouse of the Republic Studios. However, in the process of stealing the stuffed animal, one of the tentacles was torn off, in addition, Wood forgot the motor that provided the "vital activity" of the octopus. So the scene had to be shot without a motor — Wood asked Lugosi to pretend that the scarecrow was choking him.

In the future, Edward made several more films (in some he again played Bela Lugosi). The most interesting work was the painting "Plan 9 from outer space", which was awarded the "Golden Turkey" prize. The money for the film was allocated by the Southern Baptist Convention, for which the film crew had to undergo a baptism ceremony in it, and one of the members of the church starred in the film itself. "Plan 9 from outer space" became the peak of Wood's career, despite the obvious shortcomings, the director was not able to surpass him in the subsequent career. The plot of the film told about how flying saucers begin to appear over Hollywood, but the US government strongly denies this fact. In addition, the government is even trying to fight them by launching missiles. The aliens decide that the earthlings may well cause great harm to the galactic community, which is why they begin to implement their plan under the code name "Plan 9". The aliens revive two dead men who are called to enslave humanity. A U.S. Army colonel, a police lieutenant, and a pilot who lives near the cemetery come to grips with them and the aliens.

When shooting, Wood tried to do without serious financial costs. The cockpit was filmed as follows: the pilots were sitting on country chairs, and behind them hung a shower curtain. As flying saucers over the Hollywood model, cheap toy models from a children's store were used, suspended from a fishing line (Wood himself launched the myth that they are caps made of white metal for the wheels of a car)
